THE DYING READING CULTURE
The culture of reading is dying among the youths and this beginning to show even in academic work. Gone are the days young people read best sellers such As Hardly Chase, Mills and Boon, Charles Dickens and Pacesetters etc. today’s youths even find it difficult to read their school textbooks.
This explains why performance in the use of English has continued to slide. This development has dominated the yearly examiner’s report.
The latest examiner’s report on literature-in-English states:”the performance of student is generally poor. Their response expose their lack of understanding of the questions that were asked and this goes to show that many of them did not read the recommended texts. Those who respond to the questions reproduced poorly from short revision notes and key points.”
One of the things responsible for the decline in the last twenty years is the reading habits of students.
